Aloe vera gel,Bitter gourd,Yogurt as Home Remedies for Nail Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition.  It is considered to be an auto-immune disorder, i.e., a condition in which the body’s healthy cells start attacking themselves.  Psoriasis is marked by red, silvery, irregular, raised patches on the skin.  It generally appears on the extremeties, elbows and knees apart from the scalp.  It can also appear on the nails.  The symptoms of nail psoriasis include:

  1. Thickening of the nails.
  2. Pitting of the nails.
  3. Irregular shape of the nails.
  4. Pale and dull, unhealthy looking nails with redness at the arch of the nails.
  5. Loosening and crumbling of the nail.
  6. Arthritis of fingers.
  7. Nail fungus may also be present in people with nail psoriasis.
  8. Skin psoriasis as most people with skin psoriasis also tend to have them on their nails.

Psoriasis is not contagious.  The reason for the disease is not known.  However, heredity is not ruled out – i.e., the chances of getting psoriasis are higher if one or both the parents or siblings suffer from the disease.

Tar, salicyclic acid, retinols and corticosteroids are generally prescribed as treatment for nail psoriasis. Even phototherapy is advised in severe cases.

Some home remedies are:

Indigo Naturalis:

This is a chinese herb found in the leaves of indigo bearing plants.  Application of  this herbal extract has been found to be helpful in controlling nail psoriasis.

Aloe vera gel:

Buy good quality aloe vera gel or better still, grow the aloe vera shrub in your kitchen garden.  You can take out the fresh gel by breaking the aloe leaf.  Take a little quantity out of it and preserve the rest of the leaf in the fridge.

Regular application of aloe vera gel on the affected area is believed to be very effective in treating psoriasis affecting the nail.

Bitter gourd juice:

Buy organic bitter gourd.  Make a glass of bitter gourd juice by throwing away the peels and the seeds inside.  Drink this juice, first thing in the morning, and do not consume anything for the next half hour.

Bitter gourd juice kills the germs and bacteria present in the body and improves the immunity levels.  This in turn helps in getting rid of psoriasis.

Yogurt:

Yogurt contains probiotics –  which means that they contain good bacteria which improve the health of a person.

For a person with nail psoriasis, consuming home-made yogurt, a number of times, during the day, would be beneficial.  It not only aids in digestion but also promotes skin health and overall immunity.

Lemon and indian gooseberry:

Drinking a glass of lemon juice mixed in warm water would bring substantial relief from symptoms in nail psoriasis.  Lemon contains vitamin C which helps in curbing infections and helps in faster healing.

The little indian gooseberry is filled with magical healing properties.  It enhances the body’s immunity levels and protects it from various skin afflictions.  Consume at least two little gooseberries, daily, to cure psoriasis.  Otherwise,  eat at least one gooseberry along with a little manuka honey to gain good health benefits.

Salt water:

Immerse the nails, at least twice a week, for periods of ten minutes, in warm salt water.  After that, gently scrub them with a soft brush.  Do not push or clip the cuticles.

Some tips to help in nail psoriasis:

  1. Trim the nails and keep them as short as possible.
  2. Wear cotton gloves while working with your hands. Especially while cooking, cleaning and washing the vessels. This prevents possible injury to them.
