What is jukam
Jukam is the urdu word for a common cold. While, there is no cure for a jukam, its symptoms could be treated. A jukam occurs due to a viral infection. The infection runs its course of usually 7 – 8 days. It generally results in a headache, mild cough, intermittent sneezes, stuffy nose, moderate fever, body ache, etc. If left untreated, it might develop into strep throat, bronchitis problems or even pneumonia.
What home remedies could treat a jukam
A simple home remedy for treating the symptoms arising out of a jukam, involves the usage of garlic. The medicinal values of garlic have long been recognized. It is a potent antiviral and an antibacterial. It detoxifies and augments the immune systems. On account of such qualities, it assists in boosting the respiratory functions. It is recommended to combine 1 crushed clove of garlic with 2 tsp of lemon juice and 1 tsp of honey for consuming every day till the symptoms decrease. Alternatively, a few cloves of minced garlic could be sprinkled on salads or meals.
Another home remedy advises using ginger to treat the symptoms of jukam. Ginger has antiviral and anti-inflammatory characteristics, apart from being an effective expectorant. It is recommended to consume raw grated ginger along with cloves, some lemon juice and a pinch of salt. Alternatively, a combine of dry ginger powder along with some clarified butter and jaggery could be consumed. In either of the two solutions, honey and lemon could be added for additional effectiveness. Raw ginger is particularly effective in clearing the nasal passages.
An easy solution for treating a jukam is preparing a solution consisting of 1 tbsp of cinnamon powder and 2 cloves, boiled in a cup of water and steeped for a few minutes. Filter the solution while it is still warm and consume thrice, every day for a rapid relief. This solution could be more effective, if 1 tbsp of honey was added as well. Alternatively, chew on a piece of cinnamon bark for relief from a common cold and an inflamed sinus.
An effectual resolution of a common cold and its symptoms lies in peppers. Peppers of all variety, from cayenne to ek lota (Subcontinent), have varying degrees of capsaicin. The same compound that gives peppers, their bang. The compound is a natural remedy for treating the various symptoms of the concerned ailment. Capsaicin dissolves the mucus and facilitates its drainage. It is advised to sprinkle black pepper over soups or meals regularly and particularly when suffering from a common cold. Alternatively, 1 tbsp of black pepper powder could be added to a cup of warm water for gargling.
The symptoms of a jukam can be effectively treated with red onions. It is recommended to thinly cut 2 – 3 red onions and sandwich the slices in between some raw honey. Allow it to remain like that for 12 – 15 hours and consume thereafter. This procedure offers to minimize the incidence of a common cold and yields lasting & quick relief from the symptoms.
The medicinal qualities of honey are undisputed. Honey contains antibacterial and antiviral agents. It assist in calming an irritated throat and may also lessen the duration of a jukam. It is advised to consume 1 tbsp of honey every 2 – 3 hours or combine it with lemon juice in a cup of warm water for sipping, in the same frequency. Honey has been observed to be particularly effective, if consumed regularly.
– Spiced tea
A simple Ayurvedic home remedy recommends sipping spiced tea for relief from symptoms of common cold. To prepare this tea, roast and combine 1 tbsp of coriander powder with 1 tsp of each, cumin / fennel / fenugreek seeds. It is advised to stir in 1 tsp of candy sugar in the solution for taste. Boil, steep & filter the tea for sipping while tolerably warm.
