Describe a stuffy nose
A stuffy nose signifies a nasal congestion or just a blocked nose. It is the result of swelling in the nasal cavity that leads to the accumulation of mucus. On account of the obstruction, natural breathing becomes a problem. The chief reasons responsible for a stuffy nose are cold, influenza and reaction to allergens. This ailment often runs its course before terminating. However, it is important to treat this condition lest it progresses to other disorders such as an ear infections or a restless sleep. While there are numerous solutions for resolving a stuffy nose, it can be addressed by simple home remedies that restore comfort.
How can a stuffy nose be treated with home remedies
– Steam inhalation
Inhaling steam is a simple solution for resolving a stuffy nose rapidly. This procedure mimics an expectorant by removing nasal obstructions, other than lubricating an inflamed air passage. It is suggested to inhale the steam generated from boiling water mixed with 1 tsp of carom seeds and optionally a few drops of peppermint oil. The head & the bowl of boiling water might be covered with a towel to restrict the steam escaping.
– Nasal irrigation
An electro-mechanical device or a neti pot might be used for irrigating the nasal passage. The procedure treats nasal congestion by clearing the obstructing mucus or irritants from the path of the air passage. It is recommended to use a saline solution or stir 1 tsp of salt in distilled / boiled water for this purpose. Subsequently, the used irrigation apparatus should be sanitized to prevent possibilities of contamination.
A simple remedy for treating a stuffy nose is using a room humidifier. Otherwise, the washroom may be saturated with warm humid air by running a hot shower. Alternatively, a washcloth may be dampened with warm water and put over the face. Warm and humid air facilitates a constant flow of mucus, other than moistening the nasal passages and continuing that way thereby, unclogging the respiratory tract.
– Eucalyptus oil
The oil extracted from eucalyptus has menthol that eases nasal congestion and inflammation. It is recommended to drip a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil onto a handkerchief for inhaling the smell it generates, throughout the day. Otherwise, a few drops of this oil might be put on the shirt collar. Alternatively, a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil might be put on the pillow for a restful sleep, despite a nasal congestion.
Garlic is endowed with numerous characteristics that contribute to its status of being a unparallel ingredient in holistic medicine. It is an antiviral and an antibacterial that guard against infections of the respiratory tract, which might result in nasal congestion. It is suggested to crush 2 – 3 garlic cloves and along with 1 tsp of turmeric powder, it may be mixed in 1 cup of boiling water for consumption.

Black pepper has such advantages for a stuffy nose as are un-imaginable. The smell emanated by black peppers excites the sinuses and leads to an urge for sneezing. Unsuppressed sneezing expels the accumulated mucus & the irritating allergens from the nose and clears the nasal congestion. It is advised to add a few drops of any oil to some black pepper for applying under the nose, for a rapid relief from congestion.

Also, the warmth of fenugreek tea assists in thinning the mucus. It is suggested to stir 2 – 3 tsp of fenugreek seeds in 1 cup of water for boiling and after straining sipping the solution. This procedure should be followed 2 – 3 times, every day.
