Nasal Congestion and Home Remedies


Nasal congestion refers to the phenomena of the nasal passages being blocked due to clogging and can be the cause for serious breathing difficulties. There are various reasons for the occurrence of nasal congestion and some of these include allergic reactions, hay fever, sinusitis, air pollution, chemical reactions and non-malignant tumor growth in the nose. When affected with cold or flu then also nasal congestion arises. Nasal congestion is also referred to as ‘blocked nose’ or ‘stuffy nose’.

Mucus accumulation in the throat, chest and / or respiratory organs indicates towards nasal congestion. Swelling and inflammation of the nose membranes and are also signs of nasal congestion. Other symptoms for nasal congestion include sneezing, breathing problems and blocked nose.

The nasal congestion syndrome is to be treated as soon as possible or it could lead to ear infections, restlessness, further breathing issues and lack of sleep. It is easy to treat nasal congestion with natural home remedies. Serious nasal congestion disorders are to be shown to the doctor for a consultation as home remedies may not be very helpful when suffering from an advanced stage of nasal congestion.

Home Remedies

There are numerous home remedies that can help solve the nasal congestion problem. These remedies are natural and have no side-effects. The home remedies can be applied for relief from the nasal congestion condition.

  • Garlic Relief

Garlic is effective in the cure for nasal congestion with its healing qualities. The anti-fungal and anti-viral nature of the garlic bulb is at play in this context. Few crushed garlic cloves can be added to boiling water in a pan on the gas. Allow the mixture to boil for few minutes. Turmeric powder can also be sprinkled in the pan. Downing of the drink daily can help to clear the congestion. The ingestion of freshly pressed garlic cloves can also relieve one from nasal congestion.

  • Apple Cider Vinegar and Honey Remedy

The nutrient content in apple cider vinegar can be beneficial in battling nasal congestion. Immunity levels in the body can be raised and clearing the mucus can also be achieved with the vinegar. Honey is also known to contain therapeutic value. Mix 2 tablespoons of the vinegar with 1 tablespoon of honey in lukewarm water. Sip the drink 2-3 times in a day on a regular basis for clearing the congestion.

  • Steam Solution

Inhalation of steam can prove to be highly effectual in getting reprieve from the nasal congestion state. The respiratory tract can be cleared of clogging with steam inhalation thereby easing the breathing process. Boil water in a pot on the gas and drop crushed carom seeds in the pot of boiling water. The steam should be inhaled after getting the pot off the gas. Repeat the procedure 3-4 times in a day. Peppermint oil or Vicks Vaporub can also be mixed with boiling water and inhaled. Steam is a common way of fighting nasal congestion and this home remedy is sure to keep the nasal tubes free of clogging while enhancing the breathing function.

  • Saline Treatment

Stir one teaspoon of table salt with 2 cups of hot water for an even saline mixture. Using a dropper the prepared solution can be thrust in the nostrils for instantaneous clearance of the respiratory routes.

  • Eucalyptus Oil

Eucalyptus oil also comes to the rescue when dealing with a congested chest or throat. Dab 3-4 drops of the oil in a handkerchief and inhale the oil. The aroma of the oil can benefit the breathing course by keeping the nose and lungs free of clogging.

  • Other Remedies

Chewing some fresh basil leaves before breakfast ant at bedtime can also have a favorable impact where the treatment of nasal congestion is concerned. Spooning 2 teaspoons of honey in a cup of warm water and drinking the mixture daily can also make a positive difference in solving the nasal congestion problem.
