Home Remedies for Nits

Nits and Home Remedies

Lice are wingless seed-sized six-legged parasites that dwell in human hair and suck human blood while being perched on the hair scalp. Nits are the eggs laid by lice. Nits are whitish to yellowish in color and oval-shaped. Lice and nits are troublesome creatures that are able to fly, jump and hop. Lice and nits are not fatal but are extremely bothersome. It is tiresome to deal with nits as they cannot be eliminated easily. Their contagious nature is rather frustrating and they can spread from head-to-head. Sharing of hair-combs and hair-brushes, clothes or beds can also witness multiplying of the annoying creatures. They can cause itching of the scalp and be the reason for inflammation due to their blood feeding nature. Lice and nits can also be the reason for infections in the body. Girl students are normally affected with this condition. Even boys can sometimes suffer from this syndrome.

The most common remedy for nits is the use of medicated shampoos also known as pediculicides. These shampoos can be applied on dry hair and kept for 10 minutes before the hair being washed. The treatment can be repeated after 10 days to kill the nits if they survive the first batch. If the nits still persist in the hair then the doctor can be consulted or other home remedies can be tried.

Special combs are available in the markets to remove lice from the hair and their use can help in nits and lice removal to a certain extent. When a child is infested with lice then some steps can be taken to contain the nits spread. Avoidance of sharing combs and brushes is vital in this context. Clothing and bed sheets and other washable items can be washed to neutralize the lice and nits. Objects that cannot be washed can be put in plastic bags or in the refrigerator for 1 week to ensure the lice are killed.

There are also various home remedies that can be tried for getting rid of the nits. However it should be noted that when the scalp is damaged extensively then advice from a medical practitioner is necessary.

Home Remedies

The home remedies listed below are natural and simple and can be followed for favorable results where elimination of nits is concerned.

  • Garlic Rescue

The pungent aroma of garlic can lead to suffocation of lice and nits thereby eliminating them. Make a paste with 8-10 garlic cloves and mix with 2-3 teaspoons of lime juice. Massage the head with the mixture and keep for 30 minutes. Thereafter wash off the hair. Repeat the course until the desired results are achieved.

  • Listerine Treatment

Listerine mouthwash can also be applied on the hair scalp to kill the nits. Soak the hair thoroughly with Listerine and put on a swimming cap to lock the lice for 3-4 hours before washing the hair with a strong shampoo. The smell of spearmint in Listerine wards off the aggravating insects. The procedure can be repeated if required but positive results are seen with the first treatment only as all lice and nits are killed instantly with the smell of Listerine. Spraying the hair of children with diluted Listerine in water when they go to school can also keep the hair clean of lice and nits.

  • Salt-Vinegar Remedy

Mixture of ¼ cup of salt and ¼ cup of vinegar can be prepared. Spray the ready solution in the hair covering all ends. Leave the hair for 2-3 hours after putting on a shower or swimming cap. Follow with washing the hair. Repeat the course every few days for nits elimination.

  • Rubbing Alcohol Therapy

Purchase a bottle of rubbing alcohol and wet the hair with the liquid thoroughly. Massage the alcohol into the hair using hands. Then apply conditioner to the hair scalp and ensure the scalp is covered with the conditioner. Use a long-toothed comb and brush the hair with the comb to get the lice out of the hair. It might take an hour or so to complete the process. Then take a shower and wash hair twice while scrubbing the hair thoroughly. Successful abolition of the nits can be achieved here.
