– Tea tree oil
An effective home remedy for treating scabies involves the use of tea tree oil. This tree, a native to the Australian continent, has several medicinal benefits. The oil extracted from it, has got chemical compounds that function as an antiseptic / antifungal / antibacterial / antiparasitic / anti-inflammatory agents. Additionally, it has a substance called terpinen-4-ol that eradicates scabies. Combine this oil with olive oil in equal proportions and apply on scabies affected skin. Alternatively, put about 12 drops of this oil in a bathtub full of warm water and soak in it. It reduces the pain / swelling and quickens recovery from scabies.
– Neem oil / leaves
The neem tree has multi-faceted medicinal properties. Its benefits arise from its antifungal / antibacterial characteristics and it can also be used as an antiseptic. Essentially, neem oil / leaves are a botanical pesticide that also resolve numerous skin ailments. Neem oil / leaves detoxify and disable scabies mite from multiplying. Its oil could be applied on the scabies affected skin for absorption and preventing further spread of the ailment. Combined in equal proportions with turmeric, it becomes an antiseptic paste that reduces the itching and quickens recovery from scabies. Its leaves could be boiled and the water consumed for eliminating the scabies mites.
– Cayenne pepper
Another simple home remedy for treating scabies involves the use of cayenne peppers. Cayenne peppers contain a substance called capsaicin that eradicates an episode of scabies by burning and eliminating the mites responsible for the ailment. A convenient method of harnessing the virtues of capsaicin is mixing a cup of crushed cayenne peppers in a bathtub full of warm water and soaking in it, till the waters cools. Absorption of capsaicin by the skin, effectively eradicates the scabies mites. However, the water may result in increased tenderness of skin on sensitive / sore areas and it should not be allowed above the neck as it will burn olfactory / ocular organs.
Turmeric has long been an integral part of cooking, particularly in Asian dishes, both for its flavor and fragrance. It has various medicinal advantages such as its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory characteristics that can also resolve the symptoms of scabies. To unleash its medicinal benefits, it is advised to combine 1 tbsp of its powder with some drops of lemon juice and water. It will result in a rather stiff paste that needs to be applied on scabies affected skin for approximately 60 minutes, before being washed away with lukewarm water. Alternatively, the lemon juice could be substituted with powdered neem leaves. Either remedy, results in soothing scabies affected skin.
– White vinegar
White vinegar is a common substance, found in virtually all kitchens. It is also an ingredient in home remedies that assist in eradicating the scabies mites. The acidic characteristics of white vinegar alter the pH level, or the acidic balance, of the skin. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported on a study that found any alteration of acidic balance of the skin results in exterminating the (scabies) mites. To achieve this, combine white vinegar and water in equal proportions, for application on the scabies affected skin. Allow the skin to absorb the combine and rinse after a few minutes, with lukewarm water.
The vital mineral, zinc does not eliminate the scabies mites or heal the parasite infested skin. Instead, it guards against further fungal and secondary infections. By doing so, it shields against scabies in-directly. Increased consumption of foods such as soybeans / wheat bran / sunflower seeds / whole grains / etc. assists in a greater intake of zinc. Alternatively, finely grind a few zinc tablets into a powder and mix it with some water to derive a thick paste for application on the affected skin. Some turmeric powder may also be added to make this mixture more effectual. Allow the skin to absorb the nutrients by drying naturally for about half an hour, before washing off with lukewarm water.
Some other home remedies involving lavender oil, household bleach and aloe vera might also be used to gain relief from scabies and soothe the skin. While treating scabies it is vital to stay away from infected people and maintain cleanliness.
