Describe stomach ache
Stomach aches are common and a frequently complained upon problem. Any pain sensed in the abdomen region is popularly referred as stomach pain, though it may indicate some other underlying issue. A good example is that of the pain arising due to a disorder affecting the appendix. Generally, stomach ache is restricted to indigestion / gas / ulcers.
During an episode of stomach ache, spicy & fried foods should be avoided and the intake limited to a simple diet consisting of bananas, toasts, rice, buttermilk, etc. Addition of carminative herbs such as caraway seeds, carom seeds, coriander seeds, anise seeds, etc. in meals is recommended. Chewing on mint or fennel seeds, after the meals is advised.
Each individual type of pain has its own requirements. The good aspect about natural home remedies is that if the pain is misdiagnosed and treated, it does not result in an adverse affect on the actual issue.
Stomach ache due to indigestion
A simple home remedy for treating stomach aches is consuming probiotics. They are the opposite of antibiotics. The good bacteria in the guts are called probiotics that immensely aid in digestion. Unflavored & unsweetened yogurt / buttermilk are excellent probiotics that also have various beneficial nutrients. Yogurt / buttermilk could be fortified with other ingredients that aid in digestion such as coriander / mint leaves, cardamom, etc. A pinch of salt may be added to enhance the taste.
– Fennel seeds
Another simple home remedy for curing stomach aches due to indigestion, involves the use of fennel seeds. They stimulate the intestinal tract resulting in an increased secretion of digestive acids. These seeds contain a volatile oil anethole that soothes the inflammation of the stomach lining and decreases the incidence of discomfort. In South Asia, fennel seeds are commonly chewed on after the meals and are gaining in popularity elsewhere, as a mouth freshener.
– Cumin seeds
A home remedy for guarding against indigestion, involves using cumin seeds. Cumin seeds have a compound called cuminaldehyde that excites the salivary glands into producing an increased quantity of saliva and thereby, aids the digestion. Additionally, cumin seeds also have a compound thymol that stimulates gastric secretions and assists with digesting food. An Ayurvedic remedy advises boiling & steeping 2 tbsp of cumin seeds in 4 cups of water, before consumption, to gain relief from stomach ache.
Stomach ache due to gas
– Baking soda
Formation of intestinal gas results in an excessively bloated stomach and sometimes, even nausea. Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, offers instant relief from gas as it neutralizes the intestinal acids. The stomach digests food with breaking it down by hydrochloric acid. Antacids attempt to balance this acid and when it reacts with baking soda, it evens out and thereby, relieves the ache due to formation of gas. A half tsp of baking soda in a cup of water, offers instantaneous results.
Ginger contains the compounds gingrols and shogaols that assist the intestinal muscles in easing and thereby, relieves stomach ache. It is also advised to be consumed for relief from nausea that sometimes accompanies a stomach ache. While the intake of ginger could be in any form, it is advised to avoid lozenges / drinks as these are likely to be artificially flavored, colored and sweetened. Thus, it is healthier to peel & slice or crush raw ginger for chewing on.
Stomach ache due to ulcers
– Potato juice
Generally, an incident of ulcers should be consulted with a gastroenterologist. However, the physician or an emergency may not be available or be very inconvenient to access. Under such circumstances, a safe home remedy for intestinal ulcers, involves crushing or grating a few potatoes for grinding and deriving their juice. Mixing 1 unit of this juice with 3 units of water and consuming the liquid, aids in gaining relief from a stomach ache due to ulcers. The awful taste of raw potatoes could be camouflaged with a few drops of honey and lemon.
