Home Remedies for Throat Infection

Sore throats are a frequently complained of phenomena. While they are not alarming, they often result in pain and discomfort. A sore throat indicates that the pharynx, which connects the mouth with the esophagus, is inflamed. The pharynx gets in inflamed due to a viral, bacterial or fungal infection. It also gets irritated on account of exposure to allergens such as smoke / pollutants / pollen / dander / dryness / etc. It might be accompanied with an upset stomach / common cold / swollen glands / a headache / etc. Rather than consulting a physician, common home remedies may be tried to treat this condition.

How can a sore throat be treated with home remedies

 

– Salt water

A simple home remedy for treating a sore throat is gargling with salted warmed water. Salt has antiseptic characteristics and it drains the water out from mucous membranes in the throat. It effectively decreases the phlegm and attempts to eliminate the inflammation, thereby enabling instantaneous results. It is advised to thoroughly stir 1 tsp of salt in warmed water for gargling. The salt may be substituted with honey, subject to individual preferences. Repeat this exercise 4 – 5 times every day for lasting results.

– Apple cider vinegar

Another home remedy for treating a sore throat involves using apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar has antibacterial characteristics that aid in treating sore throats. It is recommended to mix 1 tbsp of apple cider vinegar along with 1 tsp of each, honey & lemon, in a glassful of warm water and consumed. Alternatively, 1 tbsp of apple cider vinegar and 1 tsp of salt may be stirred thoroughly in a glassful of warm water for gargling. Either exercise, repeated 4 – 5 times every day, yields quick results.

– Cinnamon

A popular home remedy for treating sore throats is stirring 1 tsp of each, cinnamon & black pepper powder and a dash of cardamom powder in a glassful of warm water, for filtering & gargling with. Alternatively, adding a few drops of cinnamon oil in 1 tsp of organic honey for consumption, also aids. Repeating either of the two remedies, several times every day relieves the irritation and discomfort, arising due to a sore throat.

– Garlic

The medicinal properties of garlic have long been acknowledged. It has potent antiseptic and antibacterial characteristics that may aid in treating sore throats. It is advised to chew on a clove of raw garlic regularly for intake of allicin, a compound that may treat sore throat by eliminating the causative bacteria. Another option is to stir a few drops of garlic oil in a glassful of warm water for gargling. Apart from these remedies, it is recommended to include, preferably raw garlic, in meals or salads. Garlic may also be consumed in form of health supplements.

– Turmeric

A simple home remedy for treating sore throats in using turmeric. Turmeric is a constituent of probably every kitchen. It is advised to stir in 1 tsp of turmeric powder in a glassful of warm milk for consumption, every morning. Another option is to mix in 1 tsp of each, turmeric & black pepper powder in a glassful of warm milk, for consumption before sleep. Alternatively, a half tsp of both, turmeric powder & table salt could be stirred in a glassful of warm water for gargling twice every day.

– Fenugreek

An effective home remedy for treating sore throats is using fenugreek seeds. The seeds of fenugreek assist in dissolving the accumulated mucus and thereby relieve from the pain & inflammation, arising from a sore throat. It is recommended to put 2 tbsp of fenugreek seeds in 6 cups water, for boiling. Once the temperature reduces, the solution could be filtered and gargled with, a few times every day. The procedure offers relief from a sore throat, over a few days.
