Home Remedies for Toothache

Introduction

A tooth pains on account of a variety of reasons. It could ache due to a joint disorder / loosened fillings / gum ailments / a fracture / an infection / tooth cavity / etc. It results in a throbbing pain and is sometimes accompanied with a swelling & oral bleeding. Toothaches also make the lower part of outer ears, very tender. Occurrence of toothache signifies damage to pulp, the central part of tooth that generally transmits sensation. This part comprises of several nerve endings that also sense the difference in temperature. The pulp could get inflamed or irritated on account of various reasons. Only a qualified dentist would be able to determine the exact reasons responsible for a toothache. Usually, a toothache should be corrected by a dentist before deterioration. However, if it is inconvenient to consult a dentist, some home remedies may be experimented with.

How can toothaches be treated with home remedies

 

– Cloves

Cloves have long been used to treat toothaches. They have an anesthetic / antibacterial / anti-inflammatory effect that soothes the irritated teeth. It is advised to powder 3 – 4 cloves for mixing into some carrier oil, and applying on the inflamed tooth for an instantaneous relief. Alternatively, a cotton ball could be soaked with clove oil and held on the inflamed tooth. An option is adding a few drops of clove oil in a glass of warm water and gargled, 3 – 4 times every day.

– Garlic

Another popular home remedy for treating toothaches, involves the use of medicinal qualities of garlic. Garlic possesses antibiotic characteristics that minimize oral discomfort. It is recommended to make a paste with 2 – 3 crushed garlic cloves with a tiny amount of common table salt or black pepper, for applying on the inflamed tooth. Alternatively, these cloves of garlic could be gradually chewed on for decreasing the oral pain. Garlic may contribute to an awful breath though, its use is justified.

– Pepper & salt

Pepper and salt, are the two substances that have antibacterial / analgesic / anti-inflammatory characteristics required for relief from a toothache. Use of both, in association, has been observed to aid against tooth sensitivity. It is suggested combining equal proportions of the two substances in some drops of water to derive a paste, for subsequent application on the tooth that hurts. Holding the paste might be difficult due to secretion of saliva though, it is necessary.

– Onion

Onions are a common ingredient in kitchens that make an effective home remedy for treating toothaches. The medicinal value of onions lies in their antiseptic and antimicrobial characteristics, apart from guarding against infections. It is advised to cut thick slices of an onion, for chewing on upon anticipating a toothache. However, if chewing is distressing, then putting the slice on the affected tooth / gum and holding it there, is advised.

– Asafetida

Another home remedy for treating toothaches, advises the use of asafetida. The health benefits of this resin, aid in managing oral problems on account of toothaches and gum infections. It is recommended to mix 1 tsp of powdered asafetida with 2 tsp of lemon juice for slight heating and subsequent application with a cotton ball, on the irritated tooth. Another option involving asafetida is frying it in clarified butter and dripping a few drops of it in tooth cavities. Either remedy, provides instantaneous relief from toothache.

– Warm salted water

A popular and an instinctive home remedy for treating toothaches is adding a couple of tsp of table salt in a cup of heated water and rolling the fluid in the mouth.
